everyone has a story
I was out for dinner with friends when all of a sudden out of nowhere I thought I was going to be sick. I run to the bathroom and locked myself in the first toilet cubicle I could reach, removed all my clothes and sat on the toilet until I could walk again... I realised I wasn’t going to be sick, I was about to faint!
Later on, that night I called my mum and I broke down crying, I had never in my life ever experienced anything like it and I knew something wasn’t right. I was usually really fit and healthy. But over the three months leading up to this night, I had slowly started feeling more stressed, tired and overwhelmed with life. I felt like coffee was the only thing keeping me going and the only way I was able to function at work. I wasn’t sleeping and I was waking up 2 or 3 times during the night. Day to day life activities like getting out of bed, getting ready for work, all started to feel like I was running a marathon every day.
I didn’t even have enough energy after work to cook myself dinner, let alone do any form of exercise. I had become super sensitive to lights and noises. I started feeling more and more anxious in social situations and being around people. All I wanted to do was run away and hide from everything and everyone.
It was pretty clear that if I wanted to get better, I needed to make some big changes in my life.
I took some time out from work and everything to reflect on what was going on and I started working through the mess. I tackled one thing at a time. I reflected on all parts of my life. My career, finances and my health. I discovered after years of long-term stress working for a large corporate company, eating poorly and being deficient in several vitamins and minerals, my body just couldn’t take any more physical, emotional and nutritional stress. My body had enough and I needed to listen!
First, I started by having a number of different blood tests to see what was going on and to check my vitamin and mineral levels. I got supplements to support me in my recovery. I changed my diet, gave up drinking coffee and alcohol. Then I worked out where I was spending my time, energy and money. I sorted through my things and started decluttering my life in several different ways, I sold most of my expensive clothing, shoes, jewellery and glasses on trade me. I stopped getting pedicures, manicures and other beauty related type appointments. I also restructured my mortgage to allow me leaving my full-time corporate job of 15 years to work for a smaller company, part time. I really went back to the basics and started to simplify my life.
Fast forward almost a year, I now have more time and energy to look after myself and focus on my health and wellbeing. I’m getting 7- 8 hours sleep and I’m waking up feeling fresh and alive again. I jump out of bed in the morning feeling motivated about life and excited about what the future holds. After work I have energy to exercise, be active and cook healthy and nutritious food. Every night I make relaxation part of my nightly rituals, where I spend at least an hour reading, journaling, having a bath or even watching a good rom com on Netflix. Which allows me to feel more calm, relaxed and grounded. I also have more time to work on what I am passionate about which is helping others find their version of a happy balance.
